Duh, WHO delivers the babies?
For years and probably centuries, our culture has languaged childbirth as “the doctor delivered the baby” or, “the nurse/midwife/husband delivered the baby”. Well, I’m here to tell you that that is a total unadulterated MYTH! Why? Come on now, really? Because THE WOMAN DELIVERS THE BABY! She has held the baby in the most amazing container for all those months. SHE DELIVERS THE BABY! That’s why we call it “labor”! Those other folks? Well, they “catch the baby”.
What can be done to put this crazy false narrative to rest?
- Don’t say anyone delivered the baby EXCEPT the mom. So, it would be something like, “Yea, my friend delivered her baby” or “My daughter worked hard to deliver the baby” or “my mom worked hard to deliver me”.
- Whenever you hear anyone say, “The doctor/nurse/midwife/husband/ (etc.) delivered the baby” immediately (and gently) remind them that, acutally it was the woman who delivered the baby.
- If the baby comes via c-section, well, one could say something like, “the mom delivered the baby via c-section”.
